By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Anthony_Uccello]Anthony Uccello

The worst Xbox 360 problem is the red ring of death, and that is exactly what this article is going to help you with. If your Xbox 360 problem is that your system is freezing and you are getting red lights on the power button this article is for you.

You are going to learn:

-the cause of the red light Xbox 360 problem

-what you should NOT to do when attempting to fix your Xbox

-a guide on how you can fix your Xbox 360 problem yourself, and get rid of red light errors once and for all!

First off I will acknowledge how pissed off you may be to have this Xbox 360 problem. It is a royal pain, it ruins you game time as you are in constant fear of freezing. Worse, it drops you from online games (hurting your game score) and you constantly lose level progress.

This red light Xbox 360 problem essentially turns your system into a paper weight.

However, no matter how frustrated you get, don't resort to desperate quick fix tricks (like the towel trick I will show you in a moment). There is a safe and fast way to repair your Xbox 360 problem permanently, and you will see how you can do that.

The cause of the red light Xbox 360 problem

Heat! The cause of this red light freezing Xbox 360 problem is heat!

Here is the technical explanation: The heat sink (the cooling unit) was made too small by Microsoft. They made it small to make room for the DVD drive. Now what happens is this heat sink is too small to keep the motherboard cool. As the motherboard heats up, it vibrates. These vibrations cause the GPU (graphics processing unit) to come loose. The cause of your Xbox 360 problem is the GPU coming loose and your system locking up.

The fix to this Xbox 360 problem is explained below, but basically what you need to do is lessen the vibrations of the motherboard and allow it to breath more (thus keeping it cooler). Don't worry, this is not as hard as it sound, and you can fix your Xbox 360 problem with basic house hold tools.

No technical experience is required with a safe Xbox 360 repair, but in your frustration do not resort to the towel trick!

The towel trick will not fix your red ring of death

Some blogs and sites are saying you wrap your system in a towel (leaving it on and over heating it) or using a hair dryer and over heating. Do not do this.

You saw above how heat is the cause of your freezing Xbox 360 problem, so more heat will only make your Xbox 360 problem worse.

You have been warned.

Your Xbox 360 Problem Resolution Guide

Before doing anything, I suggest you take a look at a professional Xbox 360 repair guide. These guides have videos and step by step instruction to guide you through the whole process. They make it very easy to follow along.

Also, do not be scared to take your system apart. 94% of red light error Xbox 360s don't need new parts, they just need a small tweak to get them up and running. It is not hard to take your system apart and do this repair. Besides, it's broken now anyways isn't it?

Also, you CAN fix this Xbox 360 problem by sending it in to Microsoft, but it will cost you $140 and it will take 6 weeks. This Xbox 360 problem resolution guide (and a professional Xbox 360 repair guide) are very easy and a lot cheaper. Choose what works best for you.

So with that and mind (and my strong recommendation to watch a repair video) here is how you fix your freezing Xbox 360 problem once and for all (note: the arctic silver thermal compound can be found at any computer store and it only costs about $1):

1. Remove the face plate and casing. You will find slightly grey circles among all the holes on your system. Poke these with a sharp point. Also, at the back, there are 6 tiny box shapped holes that also need to be poked in order to pop your system casing.

2. Remove the DVD drive and unplug it's cables

3. Gently take the motherboard out.

4. Flip the motherboard over and look at the 2 X-shaped clamps. The heat sink is a big silver box on top of one of these X-clamps. Pop that X-clamp off and unscrew the heat sink.

5. Now clean the CPU and GPU with rubbing alcohol (remove all the thermal compound).

6. Once clean, put new arctic silver thermal compound over the CPU and GPU.

7. Before putting the heat sink back, put 2 nylon washers under the heat sinks holes above the motherboard, and before you screw in the screws, put 2 washers on them as well. This allows your motherboard to breath and is a very important part of fixing your Xbox 360 problem.

8. Put the motherboard and DVD drive back. Put the case back on, and power it on for 15 minutes. Just leave it. Then power it off for half an hour or so.

9. Turn it back on and you are done! No more Xbox 360 problem.

Now you know how to fix your Xbox 360 problem, I suggest you take a look at a professional Xbox 360 repair guide if you need help through this Xbox 360 repair. Just don't do nothing, your Xbox 360 is too expensive to become a paper weight.

Best of luck fixing your Xbox 360 problem!

Xbox 360 problems are a serious pain. The most common Xbox 360 problem is red light errors, the most infamous of which is known as the red ring of death. This article will focus on solving Xbox 360 problems involving red lights.

Should I read this article on Xbox 360 problems?

You should read this article if....

1. you are getting 1, 2, 3, or 4 red lights

2. your system is freezing mid game (where you lose game progress or get dropped from your online match)

3. you need Xbox 360 repair but you don't want to spend $140 and wait 6 weeks sending to the Microsoft Xbox 360 repair centre

4. you want to fix your Xbox 360 red lights yourself

5. you want to learn what is causing the red ring of death

6. you want to learn the difference between 1,2,3, and 4 red lights

7. you want to fix your Xbox 360 freezing problems in 1 hour or less

It is important to know that Xbox 360 problems are a serious issue, and while you can fix them relatively quickly, you must not do anything foolish.

What should I NOT DO if I am trying to fix my Xbox 360 problems?

First and foremost, you will NOT fix Xbox 360 problems by wrapping your system in a towel. There is an urban legend going around that you can fix the red ring of death by wrapping your system in a towel, turning it on, and letting it heat up for 30 minutes (or whatever). DO NOT DO THIS!

As you will see shortly, Xbox 360 problems are caused by heat. You do not want to try any bogus "Xbox 360 repairs" that involve towels or heat because it will only make the problem worse. This goes for using hair dryers or hitting your system.

If you try any of these bogus "Xbox 360 repairs" you will only make your Xbox 360 problems worse. 94% of red light error Xbox 360's do not need new parts! That means if you are having red light Xbox 360 problems, odds are you just need a little tweak (not new parts) to get your Xbox 360 up and running. Any bogus "Xbox 360 repair" can potentially turn a temporary problem into a permanent one, and you will no longer be able to fix the problem yourself as you will need to order new parts.

What do each of the Xbox 360 red lights mean?

1 red light means you have had "general hardware failure". See the next section.

2 red lights mean your system is overheating. Turn it off immediately to avoid damage. Let it cool to room temperature before you turn it on. Make sure your system is in a well ventilated area when on.

3 red lights (or as its better known, the red ring of death) has the same meaning as 1 red light. See the next section.

4 red lights are a simple problem. It just means your AV cable is loose. Check the connection and replace if necessary.

What causes the major Xbox 360 problems: Why do I have the red ring of death?

Xbox 360 problems, as mentioned above, are caused by heat. The technical problems that result from heat are as follows:

1. The motherboard heats up and begins to flex.

2. This flexing action causing a loosening of the soldering holding the GPU (graphics processing unit)

3. As the soldering on the GPU comes loose, the GPU begins to separate from the motherboard

4. Once the GPU comes too lose, your system freezes and you have the red ring of death.

An Xbox 360 repair guide (with videos) will show you how to fix this problem once and for all. It is NOT complicated, anyone can do it, and you can fix your system in 1 hour or less using common house hold tools.

How come I am having Xbox 360 problems? I didn't do anything to my system....

Microsoft actually made a mistake, which they admitted back in July 2007. There is a design flaw that is causing a lot of people to have Xbox 360 problems.

This design flaw is a shrunken LSI heat sink. The heat sink is supposed to keep the motherboard cool, but as you can see, they made it too small, and now you have these red light Xbox 360 problems and your system is freezing up.

The reason they made the LSI heat sink smaller, in case you are wondering, is because they needed room for the DVD drive. They decided shrinking the LSI heat sink would be fine, but as it turns out, it has caused anywhere from 500,000 to 1,000,000 people to experience Xbox 360 red light error problems.

How can I fix Xbox 360 problems

As you know, the whole issue is heat. You will need to take your system apart, clean off the GPU, and put a spacer (like a washer) between the LSI heat sink and motherboard. This will allow the system to breath and stop the vibrations from disconnecting the GPU.

There are Xbox 360 repair guides available that will take you through the whole process step by step. It is not hard, and it takes less than an hour.

I am too nervous to open my Xbox 360

If you are nervous about fixing Xbox 360 problems yourself, fear not. Many people have been (and are) in the same boat as you.

Fixing your system yourself is a lot cheaper. Instead of paying $140 and waiting 6 weeks sending it into a Microsoft Xbox 360 repair center, you can fix it yourself for less than $25 usually.

You don't need advanced technical skills or tools. Just follow an Xbox 360 repair guide video, and you can fix your Xbox 360 problems once and for all.

You may hope that Xbox 360 problems will just go away, but sadly they will only get worse. The sooner you fix your Xbox 360 problems the better. Thankfully, if you fix the issue, it will no longer come back. You will be able to permanently fix Xbox 360 problems in 1 hour or less---as long as you do it right.

Now you know

1. What causes Xbox 360 problems

2. The difference between Xbox 360 red light errors

3. What the cause of Xbox 360 problems are

4. What's involved to fix your red ring of death problem

5. How simple Xbox 360 repair is, how it permanently fixes the problem, and how you don't need any technical skills or tools

The last thing you should do now is nothing. You know the cause of Xbox 360 problems, you know your Xbox 360 problems won't just go away on their own. Do something TODAY, and get back to care free gaming!
